About Erg Chebbi Desert

Erg Chebbi Desert

Erg Chebbi is a prominent sand dune desert located in the Sahara Desert near the town of Merzouga in southeastern Morocco. Stretching approximately 17 miles from north to south and about 3 miles across, it is characterized by its picturesque orange sand dunes that can rise up to 500 feet. The region is famous for its dramatic landscape, offering breathtaking views that are especially stunning during sunrise and sunset. The area is mostly uninhabited, except for some Berber villages and nomadic tribes that offer cultural experiences to visitors. Historically, Erg Chebbi has been a waypoint for travelers on trans-Saharan trade routes. Today, it's a popular destination for camel treks, sandboarding, and experiencing traditional Berber hospitality. Keen naturalists will appreciate the unique flora and fauna adapted to this challenging environment, with occasional sightings of desert wildlife such as fennec foxes.
